I was reading a story in the bible (Luke 7:1-10) and these words jumped off the page:
When Jesus heard this, he was amazed. Turning to the crowd that was following him, he said, “I tell you, I haven’t seen faith like this in all Israel!” (Luke 7:9 NLT)
And I thought to myself, will Jesus be amazed by your faith? What did this person do that amazed Jesus so?
A closer look revealed that the roman officer didn’t necessarily start out with the goal of amazing Jesus, yet it revealed 5 things he did that led to this amazing faith…
He valued and cared for others. – He cared enough to ask Jesus to heal his slave. He cared for the person around him with the lowest rank. Are you really caring for those around you, including those in the lowest ranks?
He added value to others. – He built a synagogue for the Jewish people. Are you adding value to those around you? Are you a giver or a taker, a lifter or a leaner? Serving yourself or serving others?
He earned the respect of the Jewish people. He must have lived a life of character. You earn respect by demonstrating your trustworthiness over time. What you say and how you live, match up! Expectation and experience line up. Have you consistently walked the talk and added value to those around you, earning their respect?
He influenced the influencers. – The Jewish people then pleaded to Jesus on behalf of the officer. When you earn the respect of other leaders your influence is multiplied.
He acknowledged the authority, power and deity of Jesus. – He saw Himself for who he was (human), and God for who He is (God). If we truly acknowledged God’s authority, power and deity, how would life change? How would your relationships change? How would your agenda change? What would you attempt or ask for?
Living more like the roman officer will give us the opportunity to amaze Jesus with our faith.
Wouldn’t you like to hear Jesus say, I tell you, I haven’t seen faith like this?
